For over 25 years, Malik Akbar Ali has been an integral part of the Vintage Works family, bringing to life the visions of clients and the legacy of the craft. At 47, Akbar's journey began long ago in the bustling town of Chiniot, known for its rich history and heritage in furniture craftsmanship, in the heart of Punjab, Pakistan.
Here, Akbar’s love for art and design first took root.
The craftsman’s story is one of humble beginnings and a relentless pursuit of excellence. As a child, he found solace in drawing, a talent that caught the eye of his Ustaad, the late Haji Allah Ditta. Under his tutelage for seven years, Akbar honed his skills, learning not just the craft of furniture-making, but also the art of design and expression.
Years later, Akbar’s journey led him to Lahore, where fate intervened in the form of a visit to Cheema Hospital in Daska. It was here that he first laid eyes on the Vintage Works factory and met the visionary founder, Rahat Cheema. Impressed by Akbar's talent, Mrs. Cheema offered him a chance to join the team, a decision that would shape the then young craftsman’s career for years to come.
For Akbar, each project is a labor of love, a testament to his skill and dedication. He approaches every design with meticulous detail, ensuring that each piece is a masterpiece in its own right. His passion for design is evident in every stroke of his pencil, every line drawn with purpose and precision.
“We start by looking at the product's picture, then carefully sketch it out. Next, we create a sample, paying close attention to every detail, ensuring a thorough process before crafting the final furniture piece,” he says, speaking about the design process at the Vintage Works workshop.
Over the years, Akbar has witnessed first-hand the evolution of the furniture industry in Pakistan. With the advent of the internet and social media, he notes a significant shift in client expectations and preferences.
“People now have access to a wealth of design inspiration, leading to higher standards and a greater appreciation for quality craftsmanship,” he states earnestly.
Despite the evolution in the local furniture industry, Akbar remains steadfast in his commitment to quality. For him, the most rewarding aspect of his craft is the ability to bring beauty and functionality into people's lives. Whether it's a grand project or a small custom piece, Akbar's passion for his work shines through, a testament to his standing as a master craftsman.
As Akbar reflects on his journey, he remains grateful for the opportunities that have come his way. His love for art and design continues to drive him forward, inspiring him to create stunning pieces that will be cherished for generations to come.
“Having a good art aesthetic and strong drawing skills are essential in my craft,” Akbar says. “They're what breathe life into each piece, giving it its unique character and personality. I'm always thrilled about the projects I'm currently working on. Each one brings a new challenge and a chance to create something truly special.”
In Akbar, Vintage Works has discovered not only a master craftsman but a true artist whose legacy will continue to enrich the world of furniture craftsmanship for generations to come. His unwavering dedication serve as an inspiration, reminding us of the beauty that can be created when artistry and craftsmanship intertwine.
