Rukhsana Ishtiaq: A Stitch in Time, Woven with Resilience

in The VW Blog

At the heart of the Vintage Works workshop in Daska, Punjab, the hum of sewing machines provides the backdrop for Rukhsana Ishtiaq's story of resilience and craftsmanship. As a key figure in the Vintage Works team, Rukhsana's journey from strife to empowerment echoes the meticulous artistry of the embroidery she oversees.

Born and raised in Daska, Rukhsana's story bears the mark of both tradition and modernity. After completing her Metric from a local private school and her FA from a government in Daska, life took an unforeseen turn when she lost her beloved husband, a doctor, in 2011. Left to navigate the turbulent waters of widowhood with two young sons, Rukhsana found solace and purpose amidst the loving embrace of her family.

"In 2011, after my husband's death, I found myself in a state of shock and sorrow," Rukhsana recalls, her voice soft yet resolute. "But my siblings, they became my anchors, urging me to find my footing again."

It was through the encouragement of her siblings, particularly her sister who was already a part of Vintage Works' team, that Rukhsana found herself drawn into the world of craftsmanship and creativity. Under the mentorship of Rahat Cheema, the visionary founder of Vintage Works, Rukhsana's talent blossomed, transforming her from a novice into a master of embroidery and upholstery.

"At Vintage Works, we're not just artisans; we're storytellers," Rukhsana explains, her eyes sparkling with pride.

"I didn't know the first thing about stitching when I joined Vintage Works," Rukhsana admits with a chuckle. "But Rahat saw potential where I saw only uncertainty."

At Vintage Works, Rukhsana's role transcends mere craftsmanship; she is the linchpin that holds the intricate machinery of design and production together. "We're a team of hands and hearts," she explains, her eyes alight with pride. "From selecting materials to liaising with clients, every step is a testament to our collective vision."

In the multi-layered process of design at Vintage Works, Rukhsana assumes a central role, wielding her expertise and creativity to materialize visions into reality. At the heart of her responsibilities lies the seamless coordination with clients, where she discerns their tastes and requirements, ensuring that each design is a personalized reflection of their unique style. From sourcing fabrics for furniture – keeping in mind pre-decided color palettes and thematic elements for room settings - Rukhsana's meticulous oversight encompasses every facet of the design process. Her discerning eye for detail and managerial skills are evident as she collaborates closely with the team and the Vintage Works leadership, guiding concepts through to fruition.

Indeed, Vintage Works' portfolio is filled with successful projects, each one showcasing the seamless blend of tradition and innovation. Rukhsana's eyes gleam with nostalgia as she recalls one of their projects during the pandemic. "We poured our hearts into those homes, infusing every stitch with history and heritage," she reflects. "It was gruelling, yes, but so rewarding."

Yet, amidst the accomplishments, Rukhsana's journey is a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit, particularly in the face of societal expectations.

"In Pakistan, a widow or a divorcee is often cast adrift in a sea of judgment and prejudice," she muses. "But I was fortunate; my family and Rahat, they became my lighthouses, guiding me through the storm. In a society where women like me are often marginalized and overlooked, I’m grateful I had support. Their love and encouragement have given me the strength to rise above the challenges and pursue my passion with renewed vigor."

One particular moment stands out amidst her memories - a moment of vulnerability turned into a testament of solidarity.

"During my Covid battle during the pandemic, when I was on the brink of ill-health and despair, it was Rahat and her family who pulled me back from the abyss," Rukhsana confides, her voice tinged with emotion.

"Their care saved me in more ways than one."

Through Rukhsana's story, we're reminded of the profound impact of self-belief, the strength derived from a supportive team, and the undeniable truth that humans flourish when they join forces.

Vintage Works is deeply moved by Rukhsana's remarkable journey, which embodies unwavering dedication and resilience. Her presence enriches our team, infusing every project since 2011 with inspiration and passion. Here's to embarking on many more years of shared growth, creativity, and triumphs together!
